a tale of dragons : chapter 1

orientation

A rustling sound disturbed me. I felt the wind breeze on my face. I opened my eyes and saw nothing but fog anywhere. Far away, I could smell the scent of grass. There’s someone beside me.

“I think this is the place,” that person said. A man’s voice.

“Uh-huh. I think so,” I agreed. I tightened my grip. I could sense something on my hand.

“What do you feel?” he asked again. When I’m about to answer his question, I saw a big unclear things came out from the fog. That creature, or anything, was screamed in rage.

“What do I feel?” I asked back while raised my hand and pointed something in my hand to that creature and marched forward.

It’s just another boring day at school. Mathematic, chemistry, Calvin Cycles, photosynthesis, DNA, theory of evolution, tenses, grammars, etc. This is what I should do everyday. As a student, in addition a senior, I must get through those kinds of things every second.

This time, chemistry. I sat at the back row and relaxing my muscle. The wind breeze, the warm sunlight and the cicada’s buzz mixed outside. Perfect. This would be another sleep time for me.

“Ssst, Leafa! Hey!” someone whispered. I searched for that asshole person who disturbing my precious time and found it no other than my chairmate, Fahrein, a girl with a short navy blue hair and astupid grin on her face.

“What?” I said lazily.

“Remember the person Maurain said back then? The most handsome guy on our academy!” she excitedly said.

“Hah? The most handsome person on planet?” I asked confusedly. What the heck?

“Noooooo, not on the planet! On our academy!”

I shook my head. How could I waste my time by remembered an unknown person when I need my brain to memorize those formulas? Fahrein is a smart girl so she doesn’t need all of her brain function to do that, but I’m not as smart as her. A lot more crazier, maybe.

“She means Freyr,” said someone who sat in front of me. I looked at her only to be amazed by her shiny silver hair and grey eyes.

“Oh, yea. That Freyr Vaniriad?” I asked and she nodded as the answer. “What’s up with him, Fahrein? Is he got an accident or suddenly got an amnesia or he frustrated and decided to ended his life by jumping from the window?”

“Nooo! Actually, yes, I mean, I heard one of his fangirls set a cursed on him.”

“A cursed? Are you sure about that?” asked that silverette girl in front of me. Fahrein raised her shoulder.

“It’s a gossip. Though I can barely believe it. It’s twentieth century. Nobody would believe that kind of fuss,” she explained.

“Well, put that aside, teach me how to solve this math problem,” said the silverette and both of them start discussing math. I yawned and sighed. Cursed? Voodoo? Geez, so lame.

My name’s Leafa, Leafa Astregad. My physical appearance are long black hair, 160 cm tall and a pair of emerald eyes. People often said that my name doesn’t match my apperance. Leafa, a word with a similar pronouncation as leaf. They thought my appearance would be all green from top to bottom , aside of my green eyes, and look like a fairy. But here I am, with my black jacket and an insane behaviour, with a little wicked and evil idea popped every minute on my head, doesn’t even fit the word fairy at all.

My chairmate is Fahrein Fafga. With her short navy blue hair, deep-navy blue eyes and masculine style, people often mistaken her with a guy. Yeah, she looked like a guy, only when she shut her mouth. Otherwise, she is the same with other noisy girl. She got the highest score on last mid test.

The silverette in front of me is Maurain Jremoundr. Beautiful, kind, nice and smart. Almost every guy on this school fell for her but all of them were rejected. I really like her silver hair but she said mine’s better. Her only weakness is, she always got lost. No matter how near the distance is, she always got lost. She even got lost when she went to the toilet. The toilet! It’s just two metre away from my class.

“And you, yes you, the green eyes. Read page 78 paragraph seven to eight!” ordered the teacher. Took a minute for me to realized that it was me that teacher talked to and it wasn’t chemistry anymore but ancient mythology. I took Fahrein’s book and start to read it.

“Some literature said that no diamonds may stand a chance to win against it. Its hardness and shine are undefeatable. It colors changed everytime and its beauty last forever. Dragon scale is said to be the strongest jewel on earth.

“They didn’t named it randomly, but based by the truth. The Great Lorania Gunnan, the founder of dragon scale, is said to have met the real dragon when she dissappear for almost five years. She told her apprentice about it but no one believe. Then, she wrote a journal that tell us specifically what happened during that five years and hide it. After that, she vanished,” I ended it and yawned again.

“You seem pretty tired. What’s up?” asked Fahrein.

“Dunno. Just tired. I felt like I’ve ran forty laps and, shit, I damnly tired,” I said and sighed. “I need some sleep. Aware me if the teacher seems to know what I’m doing.”

“You always get enough sleep and this kind of ‘Just tired’ activity has last for almost a week. I smell something’s fishy,” said Maurain with a detective style.

“I kinda, got a weird dream for almost a week. The same dream with fog anywhere and someone talking the same sentence.”

“What sentence?” asked Fahrein curious.

“Umm, well, ‘I think this is the place’ and ‘What do you feel’ or something like that. Fahrein, aware me, okay?” I said and closed my eyes.

“Heh, you didn’t need me to aware you, especially with you extraordinary hearing ability. You’ll be able to know exactly what happen in this class eventhough you sleep all day,” she said sarcastically. Heard that kind of compliment, I smiled a bit.

“Sir, if nobody believe her, why did they put her name on our book?” asked a male student.

“Yes, and what does the function of her journal if in the end she hide it?” asked other student.

“Even I didn’t know the reason. The researcher still looking for the answers, though. Long story short, tomorrow we’ll go to an ancient ruin near Gwerial Forest. Make a large group consist of eleven or twelve people. Since every class are going to do the same activity, you can make a group with people from other class. The details will be given to you later. Because of this activity, there’ll be no class tomorrow. For now, because the bell has rung, class dismissed!” explained the teacher while left the class.

“Wow, Gwerial Forest! I bet we could find a high value jewel there!” said one student.

“He said we’re able to make a group with student from other class!” said other.

“Hey Le, you heard that? We’ll had a trip to Gwerial Forest. What do you think?” asked Maurain. I half-opened my eyes and yawned again.

“It’s not a trip. An ancient ruin? I bet it’s gonna be a boring activity.”

“Boring or not, we must looking for our groupmates. Me, Leafa and Maurain. Who else?” asked Fahrein while wrote our name on a piece of paper.

“Well, I didn’t want to disturb you, but I think everybody in this class already had their own group,” said Maurain. “As usual, they left us.” I yawned and stretched my hands then stood up.

“So what? All we have to do is searching for other unlucky persons in other classes,” I said while walked outside.

As I thought, everyone planned about their ‘trip’ excitedly. I couldn’t understand the reason why all of them were so energetic. It’s just a mere trip, I mean, exploration.

“Lea!” greeted a male student. “How many person your group already had?” he asked. I turned my head and looked at that person. A man with a big smile on his face and a pair of grey eyes. I recognized him as one of my club’s friends, Gherania Gerard.

“Three people. Me, Fahrein and Maurain.”

“Then I come with you!” he decided.

“Hey Ghera, Leafa,” greeted another student. This time, a man with a neat uniform and a kind and soothing smile, Kirrial Nevalon. “Your group still empty?”

“Yep,” Ghera said. “Wanna join us?” he asked again and Kirrial nodded. “OK, that means five people. Who else?”

“Wait a minute, how come we suddenly accepted you guys?” I asked confusely. “I never ag..

“Leaf! Count me in!” shouted someone. I looked at that person and saw a boy with a childish face ran toward us. Nargrend Brevand. “If there were you, Kirr and Gerd, I won’t be lonely!” he said cheerfully.

“Okay. That makes six. Six more?” said Kirrial.

“I’m in,” said someone behind me. I turned around and found a jade haired young woman with a pale blue eyes. Frent Gunzhun.

“Don’t forget me, little demon,” said a man behind Frent who had a short firey-red haired hair and a passionate orange eyes. Frent’s boyfriend, Loraie Krichov. I sighed.

“Hey Leafa! How many left?” asked a girl. I turned my head and found an innocent looking girl stood not far from me. Behind her, there were three men.

“Ugh, I think, four left. You haven’t entered any group yet?”

“Yes and these gentlemen behind me neither. Do you mind if we join?” she asked.

“No,we don’t mind!” said Frent. “Right Le?” she asked my agreement. What agreement I should gave to those stupid and idiot people?

“Yes,” Maurain said. “Ri, Bvoure, Clov and Freyr. Welcome to our idiot group.”

“Hey! Who are the idiot?” asked Loraie while pat my head. Frent chuckled a bit while others laughed.

“So, it set. Brev the childish, Kirr the smartest, Frent the jade, Loraie the fire eyes, Gerd the slender, Maurain the silver, Leafa the wicked, Ri the healer, Bvoure the logic, Freyr the handsome, Clov the blond and me, Fahrein the navy,” Fahrein said while wrote all of our name. “I’ll gave it to the teacher,” she said while walked away. The four last party member approached me.

“Thank you Lea,” said Ri, the girl. “Our class consists of forty people and we lost at the game they made.” I nodded.

“It’s fine. We’re on the same boat now. Let’s give our best for tomorrow.”

“Okay. Oh, maybe you didn’t know them. The one with the blonde hair is Clov, Bouvre is the one with blue denim jacket and Freyr is the one with an ivory sweater,” she explained. I nodded.

Freyr nodded and smiled at me. For the first time, I realized the reason why he is so popular. He had a sparkling and innocent eyes, and a dazzling smile.

“Nice to meet you,” he said while turned around and walked away, approaching Loraie.

“Wait!” I suddenly shouted at him. He turned around and looked surprised.

“What?” he asked confusedly. “Is something’s wrong?” he asked.

“No, I mean yes, I mean no,” I said nervously. What am I doing, shouted at someone like that?

“Oh, is that so? You surprised me,” he said while smiled and turned his back.

“Lea? What’s wrong?” asked Maurain.

“No, its just, I felt I’ve known him. His voice sounds familiar,” I explained.

“Dejavu? But you didn’t have to called him that loud, did you? You surprised everyone,” said Maurain again. “It’s a normal phenomenon. Take it easy,” she said. I nodded and try to control my breath. Somehow, I felt I knew his voice, I really knew it.
